Reading Comprehension is Not a Commodity

Angela Maiers presents this slideshow on reading comprehension.  I wish I had attended the actual workshop, however, the slideshow still raises several important points about reading.  My favorite among them is the part about how we offer ridiculous extrinsic incentives for reading that have little to do with fostering a genuine love of reading.  The [...]

About Me Meme

Larry tagged me to post a little bit more about myself. 1. What was I doing 10 years ago? I had just turned 21 and was working part time for an afterschool enrichment program while pursuing a job working in film development and completing the editing on my own feature film. 2. What are my 5 things on [...]

Fear Not the Google Search

In the past year I’ve become aware of two subscription services marketed at schools, NetTrekker and Renzulli Learning.  Both of which are essentially portals to the internet.  NetTrekker allows teachers to search the internet and get readability information on web sites and Renzulli allows teachers to assess students’ interests and then assist them in finding [...]

A Few Good Blogs

Let’s face it, most teachers don’t read blogs.  If you’re reading this blog by e-mail then this might be the only blog you read.  If you have time for a few more, here are a few I may not have recommended before.  I’m only recommending practical, news you can use blogs.  For my other favorites, [...]

This I Believe Meme

I was tagged by Janice Stearns to post a few of my beliefs in education. I believe… that technology is not just for the gifted kids. that all students are gifted, it’s just that some are gifted in ways we haven’t discovered yet. all students can learn if only we could find a way to teach them. that parental support [...]

Workshops

I'll be presenting two workshops at CUE...

Session 2: Digital CPR: How to Bring Your Reading Series to Life with Digital Video Podcasting

Session 6: Podcasting On a Pacing Plan, How to Plan It, Produce It, and Fit It All In (with iMovie '08)

The first one is more practical in terms of project ideas and planning with OCR/HM and the second is more technical, how to use iMovie '08.

I was so disappointed I didn't get to catch you at CUE. I saw you teaching from a distance but had to be in a different session at that time. We will have to connect in the real world one of these days.

I need to connect you with two amazing first grade teachers in our district who are using video with their students. One is using Crazy Talk so her students can write and record interviews with all the national monuments and landmarks.

Hey Mat,
Thanks for the invite into your world. I won't be attending the desert event but wish I could be there.
Spring break I will be in Palm Desert however. All the best to you. What grade do you teach?

Hi Mathew! Thanks for the friend request! Shall I assume you'll be going to CUE this week? Will you be sending out tweets? I don't want to miss anything from up here in Northern California. Enjoy!
